Full-Time ELECTRONIC MONITORING (EM) TECHNICIAN/DATA REVIEWER

Job Description

Saltwater Inc. is looking for an experienced observer with strong technical/mechanical skills, an interest in technology, and a commitment to doing work that supports the health of our ocean and fisheries. This position is part of our Electronic Monitoring (EM) team, which is focused on collecting fisheries data onboard vessels using IP cameras and sophisticated data logging programs. The position will combine hands-on work with the EM system and data review; training will be provided.

 

Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out field installations and servicing of EM systems (training will be provided).
  • Provide remote break/fix trouble-shooting directly to fishing vessels carrying EM systems.
  • Document vessel service events.
  • Maintain inventory and track equipment in the field.
  • Collaborate on the development of system improvements.
  • Carry out data review.

 

EM Installs and Servicing: EM Technicians are involved with all aspects of the installation and upkeep of Saltwater’s EM system on commercial fishing vessels. Our primary duty is the preparation, installation (including configuration), and servicing of the physical components of the EM system. EM techs provide custom installations and individualized technical support to each vessel involved in the EM program.

 

Data Review: Data collected by the EM system is reviewed using Saltwater’s EM review software and established protocols to produce trip-level data summaries. The objective of the review in the Hawaii Pelagic Longline fishery is primarily to determine if EM can be used to observe and identify protected species interactions. Reviewers will also document EM system performance and data quality for each trip.

 

Skills & Experience Required.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude/skills.
  • Demonstrated data analysis and data management skills.
  • Ability to develop practical solutions to problems.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent people and communication skills.
  • Proficient with computer technologies.

 

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience as a HI fisheries observer.
  • Marine technician experience.
  • Installation experience (CCTV, GIS, computer networks, home security systems).
  • Ability to use software such as Excel, Word, ArcGIS, Milestone or other VMS.
  • Understanding of basic electricity (low voltage) and electronics.
