Job Description

Principal Duties

1. Oversees the daily operation of the quarry excavation process and the delegation of personnel & equipment to ensure effective and efficient excavation planning, drilling, blasting and hauling of rock to the plant; may serve as back-up for Manager in his absence. May also back up other superintendents as needed.
2. Plans monthly, quarterly and annual excavation in coordination with plant production requirements and keeps Manager apprised of any issues which affect productivity.
3. Collaborates daily with Processing and Shop Superintendents to ensure smooth operations in the Quarry.
4. Ensures employee compliance with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations, dust control and other environmental and safety regulations; may schedule safety meetings; recommends and/or coordinates training as designated by Manager.
5. Regularly evaluates and documents crew attendance, performance, provides coaching and/or initiates disciplinary action as necessary. Ensures that all task training is completed, documented, and filed for all equipment operation or new tasks.
6. Controls the cost of mining activities ensuring that personnel, equipment, and blasting materials are used effectively & safely to maximize the excavation output. Also continually strives to meet quality control specifications and customer needs; produces cost and/or production reports as required.
7. Monitors the impact of blasting (noise/dust) on residential neighbors and notifies Manager immediately of any problems that arise. Monitors quarry operations to limit fugitive dust production. Deploys water trucks and other dust control methods to minimize dust.
8. Develops an acute understanding of the site geology, stays abreast of new blasting technology, monitors the effectiveness of all resources used, and maintains an inventory of appropriate blasting materials and equipment to minimize down time and maximize output.
9. Assists with improvements, changes, and modifications to overall quarry operations.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
11. Promotes awareness of and follows Company and general safety policies at all times. Ensures that worker safety is a priority during daily operations.
12. Exhibits a core understanding of mutual respect and good customer service orientation during interactions with all people in the workplace.

Principal Requirements

1. High school graduate; college degree preferred. (Study of geology or related field highly desired.)
2. 5 years of quarry and/or heavy construction production. Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
3. Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Access, Email. Adaptable to in-house software which includes specialized software for blasting and seismic monitoring. Keyboarding skills sufficient to complete tasks in a timely manner.
4. Ability to apply math functions to calculate excavation volumes, blast design parameters and standard costs for excavation activities.
5. Ability to comprehend financial data for internal cost reporting.
6. Ability to read and understand job requirements and technical material.
7. Ability to read and comprehend topographical maps.
8. Type 3 driver’s license and favorable traffic abstract.
9. Blasting license highly desired, or ability to acquire one within two years.
10. Excellent interpersonal skills to ensure effective internal and external communications.
11. Current knowledge of MSHA requirements.
12. Knowledge of blasting materials and techniques helpful.
13. Must be at least 21 years of age.
