Job Description

Summary

A Sheetmetal Journeyman installs and repairs shipboard sheet metal, habitability and HVAC components using blueprints, industry standard work methods and NAVSEA guidance drawings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, or product specifications.

Determine sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling, and installing sheet metal products.

Accomplishes Removals of Steel, Aluminum, and Stainless Steel welded outfitting and fixtures using air arc or other power tools.

Selects gauge and type of sheet metal such as galvanized iron, stainless steel, steel, or aluminum. According to specifications.

Lay out and mark dimensions and reference lines on material to develop and trace patterns of product or parts, or uses templates.

Designs and fabricates templates of assorted materials such as metal, wood, or plastic, for laying out reference points and dimensions on metal plates, sheets, tubes, and structural shapes.

Sets up and operates fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and routers, to cut, bend, block and form, or straighten materials

Shapes metal material over anvil, block, or other form.

Trims, files, grinds, deburrs, buffs, and smooths surfaces.

Welds, solders, bolts, rivets, screws, clips, caulks, or bonds component parts to assemble products.

Operates power tools, saws, grinders, drills, routers and has knowledge of use of same.

Installs assemblies onboard ship according to blueprints

Inspects assemblies and installation for conformance to specifications

Repairs and maintains sheet metal products.

Identify needed materials and requisition material.

Maintain full set of sheet metal tools IAW required tool list.

Climb ladders carrying full tool bags.

Experience and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

A thorough knowledge of power tools, shipboard metal grades and HVAC components is required.

Must be able to work well with all levels of personnel whether individually or in a team environment, and especially must be able to interface and communicate with navy personnel in order to assist with repairs and troubleshooting.

Willing to work any shift and overtime as required.

Must be highly safety conscious.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience:

High school diploma required. Minimum of 3-5 years of proven experience in a metal working trade, is required and the ability to demonstrate high proficiency in this area.

Two-year technical degree or accredited apprenticeship program or the equivalent work experience in the field is required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills are required
  2. Familiarity with blueprints and drawings
  3. Ability to read and interpret documents and instructions
  4. Ability to take directions and follow instructions
  5. Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
  6. Ability to work on beams, scaffolding, ladders and confined spaces
  7. Ability to work a variety of assignments and locations on a daily or hourly basis
  8. Strong ability to be reliable, dependable and work as a team

 

 

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

 

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

This is a progression position encompassing 5 levels: JM 1, JM 2, JM 3, JM 4, and JM 5. More complex duties and time in progression is required to move from one classification to another.
