Job Description

Principal Duties

1. Assumes oversight and responsibility for purchasing and maintaining all mobile, stationary and process equipment owned or leased by the Company and used in the Company’s operations. Review and evaluate existing fleet policies and procedures including maintenance scheduling, replacement cycling, purchasing (including specification decisions) vehicle assignment and improvement recommendations to management.
2. Develop and maintain relationships with vendors, suppliers and customers. Act as the primary contact with all fleet related suppliers. Negotiate repair, rebuild, parts and complete replacement costs; warranty and fuel supply agreements. Establishes and maintains programs and systems for inspections, servicing, preventive maintenance, repairs, and inventory control of parts and equipment.
3. Develop and foster working relationships with “internal customers”. Determine their specific requirements to meet job or customer requirements. Perform research and recommend best options available. Establishes, monitors, and controls costs of maintenance processes. Stays abreast of new technology, monitors efficiency of all equipment used. Evaluates cost of repairs versus replacements.
4. Develop a system to track total cost of ownership to determine vehicle and equipment performance. Create a system to analyze vehicle and equipment costs and create exception reports, based on downtime verses production time, replacement part availability and lead time, fuel consumption, mileage and hours of operation. Recommend as to whether vehicles and equipment should be repaired, rebuilt, upgraded or sold.
5. Develop a program utilizing company GPS system to monitor for excessive idle times, create an exception report based on established bench marks. Provide at minimum, quarterly reports to business units/department managers.
6. Develop and manage a maintenance program to track inspections, servicing, preventative maintenance, repairs and inventory control of parts and equipment. Provide cost analysis for major repairs, prepare repair estimates for approval, arrange for and oversee repairs made by outside vendors.
7. Ensure Safety is informed about any vehicle or equipment involved in or appear to have been involved in an accident or show signs of user abuse. Provide Safety with repair invoices for vehicles or equipment involved in or appears to have been involved in an accident or show signs of user abuse.
8. Develop and manage a weight handling equipment inspection and certification program. To include mobile, truck mounted and fixed cranes, and associated rigging.
9. Maintain knowledge of industry relevant issues by seeking continuing education opportunities.
10. Establish and enforce departmental standard operating procedures and ensures departmental compliance with applicable laws and regulations, company policies and union contracts. Applicable laws and regulations also include those covered by HIOSH, MSHA, and PUC.
11. Manage shop personnel. Establish priorities, direct work assignments based on business unit needs, verify timecards, regularly evaluate and document worker performance, provide mentoring, coaching and required training, conduct accident and incident investigations, initiate disciplinary action as necessary.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
13. Exhibits a core understanding of mutual respect and good customer service in interactions within the workplace, professionalism appropriate to the position as a representative of the Company, leadership in managing the department’s operations, and positive relations in external community involvement.

Principal Requirements

1. High school graduate; college degree preferred. (Study of heavy equipment mechanics or related field highly desired.)
2. Minimum 10 years of maintenance responsibility for a wide range of heavy equipment.
3. Parts and inventory experience preferred.
4. Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
5. Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Access, & Email. Adaptable to in-house software which may include equipment maintenance software. Keyboarding skills sufficient to complete tasks in a timely manner.
6. Ability to perform daily tasks related to inventory, equipment costs, and purchasing.
7. Ability to comprehend financial data for internal cost reporting.
8. Must be able to read and understand job and technical requirements.
9. Type 3 driver’s license and favorable traffic abstract.
10. Excellent interpersonal skills to ensure effective internal and external communications.
