Full-Time SQL Database Admin

The SQL Server Database Administrator is responsible for providing technical support for the database environment, to include: overseeing development and organization of the databases, assessment and implementation of new technologies/applications, and providing long-term recommendations or solutions on database technology or capabilities supporting the Pacific Warfighting Center (PWC).  The SQL DBA develops methodologies for the ongoing assessment of database performance, identification of problem areas, and provides technical support through resolution of open issues/incidents. Assists in business continuity planning (BCP) and Disaster Recovery (DR) if necessary. The SQL DBA recommends technical solutions to identified problems, and provides design and implementation plans for those solutions. THE SQL DBA stands on his own, researches and develops technical solutions, and reaches back through Torch Technologies to develop and integrate solutions. Provides leadership during the development, deployment and enhancement of production applications, which may include: design, development and implementation of applications into the operational/production environments. Work with the transaction processing area(s) to develop both the physical and the logical database administration functions, and assists in the development of processing database(s) and computing environments.

The SQL DBA works closely with a team of PWC Network Engineers, system administrators, information assurance engineers, software developers and supports troubleshooting network usage and equipment issues. Provides information technology (IT) support to the Pacific Warfighting Center (PWC).

Duties and Responsibilities

Operational functions:

• Perform and monitor native SQL Server database backups.
• Restore databases as needed.
• Creating and monitoring SQL Server Jobs and Maintenance Plans.
• Periodically review SQL Server logs.
• Installing and configuring failover database instances while adhering to STIGs and best practices.
• Troubleshoot database related issues.
• Troubleshooting SQL connectivity with third-party applications.
• Capacity planning and monitoring database growth.
• Securing SQL Server using STIGs and best practices.
• Designing disaster recovery strategies.
• Ensuring indexes are rebuild and reorganized periodically and as needed.
• Troubleshooting database performance issues.
• Moving database objects from staging to production.
• Import and export data.
• Implement and maintain database mirroring and/or replication.

Development functions: (10%)

• Write and optimize T-SQL statements.
• Objects, such as stored procedures, functions, views, indexes, and triggers.
• T-SQL code review.
• Work with data architects to design database.
• Indexing database tables.
