Job Description

Summary:American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking an Archeological Technician Position with the CRDIP Program willing to dedicate 11 weeks in support Haleakala National Park in Kula, HI.

 

This excellent opportunity is ideal for an enthusiastic individual who is deeply committed to archeology.  Applicants must have strong interest in archeological field work.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program(CRDIP)is a special professional development program that supports undergraduate and graduate students, from underrepresented populations, who wish to gain exposure to and experience in the historic preservation/cultural resources fields of work. Applicants must be 18-35 and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program.

Compensation:The ACE Member will receive a living allowance of $480/week to cover the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

 

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 300-hour ($1,289.95) AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of internship service hours. Additional enrollment is required.

 

Housing: Park housing is provided at no cost to the intern.

 

 

Project Background: The project will center around an archaeological inventory survey under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of a 17-acre parcel known as the “Denman Parcel,” which is owned by Haleakala National Park, and surrounded by Kaup Ranch, in rural East Maui. The purpose of the archaeological survey will be to locate archaeological resources; record their characteristics; assess their scientific value, integrity and condition; and evaluate their National Register eligibility.

 

 

Project Goals:This project would provide an opportunity for an archaeological undergraduate or graduate student to gain experience on an NPS led archaeological survey. The ACE Member would help to disseminate data from the project to park staff to inform management decisions regarding the appropriate stewardship and protection of park cultural resources on the Denman Parcel. The project will provide real world experience and leadership skills and provide a chance to work in an archaeologically rich area of East Maui, Hawai’i.

 

 

Position Description: The ACE Member will record site locations using hand-held GPS. More in-depth recording would be accomplished using either tape and compass or plane table and alidade to produce detailed paper maps. Limited shovel testing would be undertaken where necessary to determine the presence/absence of subsurface deposits, site function and National Register eligibility. Preservation of field data, objects, specimens, together with associated records and reports will be managed as museum collections in accordance with NPS management policies. The work would be led by the Haleakala National Park Archaeologist, who would supervise the ACE Member. The ACE Member would help to disseminate data from the project to park staff to inform management decisions regarding the appropriate stewardship and protection of park cultural resources on the Denman Parcel. This position will provide real world experience and leadership skills and provide a chance to work in an archaeologically rich area of East Maui, Hawaii.

 

Qualifications:The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate their skills and experience through their resume and application and be in pursuit of obtaining or within two years of having obtained a Bachelor/Master/PhD degree in history, anthropology, cultural resource management, archaeology, public history, or other relevant field.

Required:

  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to hike across rough terrain, uneven ground, in inclement weather conditions.
    • This internship will be heavily focused on fieldwork. The weather and terrain in the field can be highly variable and requires sound physical fitness of the intern. Intern must be willing to camp or stay in a park bunkhouse during project work.
  • Proven ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • Must be 18-35 years of age (This position’s age limitations are a requirement of the Public Land Corps Act. Additionally, members must be 21+ to apply for an ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties.)
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass a federal criminal background check

Preferred:

  • And undergraduate or graduate degree with archaeology training is desired.
  • Archaeology field skills (e.g.; map and compass, plane table and alidade, and/or total station)
  • GIS data mapping
  • Applicable coursework
