Job Description

Job Purpose: This position is responsible for managing health and safety program elements and ensuring the organization is compliant with all applicable health and safety laws, regulations, policies and/or guidelines, including OSHA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers EM 385-1-1, Health and Safety Requirements Manual. Responsible for developing and recommending measures for assuring personnel safety, and monitoring and/or anticipating hazardous and unsafe situations.

  • Prepare and approve Corporate and Site-specific Safety and Health Plans (SSHP), and publish Health and Safety Message/Plans as required
  • Apply health and safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with health and safety requirements
  • Visit project sites as needed to audit the effectiveness of the SSHP
  • Remain available for project emergencies
  • Identify, analyze, and evaluate processes and procedures to determine severity of and recommend corrective actions for occupational health and safety hazards
  • Continuously monitor workers for exposure to hazardous conditions
  • Evaluate occupational exposure monitoring/air sampling and adjusting SSHP requirements as necessary
  • Alter, suspend, evacuate or terminate activities that may pose an imminent health or safety danger to workers
  • Enlist the support of safety and occupational health professionals with appropriate education and experience when working on sites with multiple (chemical, safety, ionizing radiation) hazards
  • Take appropriate action to mitigate or eliminate unsafe conditions, operations, or hazards
  • Provide health and safety training
  • Perform health and safety assessment of engineering controls and PPE
  • Comply with all applicable health and safety laws, regulations, policies, including OSHA and Army Corps of Engineers Standards
  • Identify and document both safe and unsafe acts, hazardous situations associated with an incident, accidents or injuries, and corrective actions taken on the scene
  • Participate in planning meetings
  • Review the Incident Action Plan for safety implications
  • Exercise emergency authority to stop and prevent unsafe acts
  • Investigate accidents that have occurred within the incident area
  • Provide health and safety information and reviews for business development initiatives and proposals
  • May occasionally serve as a Quality Control staff member
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Skills/Qualifications: Experience in workplace health and safety issues, workplace compensation programs for employees and training in health and safety. Knowledge and experience with the Army Corps of Engineers EM 385-1-1 requirements.

Military Installation Access and Security Clearance: This position requires access to military installations. Must be able to qualify for and obtain a base access pass and currently hold or able to obtain a security clearance.

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a safety and health field (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or a degree in a related field such as chemical/biological sciences, engineering, mathematics, or public health is strongly preferred and a minimum of three years’ experience managing safety and occupational health at hazardous waste site cleanup (or radioactive waste sites, if necessary) operations. Environmental remediation background is preferred.

License or certificate: Certified Health Professional (CSP) or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or similar certifications required.

Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 30 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the construction trades. Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely and tolerate exposure to electrical hazards.
