Full-Time Veterinary Assistant/Technician

Job Description

We are looking for a compassionate veterinary assistant or technician to join our clinic. The veterinary assistant will be responsible for assisting veterinary staff in examining and monitoring patients, taking accurate patient histories, and educating clients on basic animal care (heartworm disease/vaccine importance/spay and neuter/ etc.) maintaining clean and sanitary conditions in the clinic. The ideal candidate will be willing to learn new skills and develop their talents as an assistant. Must have a passion for caring for animals, and excellent customer service skills as the veterinary assistant will work directly with animal owners.

Veterinary Assistant Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Sanitize exam rooms and treatment areas
  • Assist in holding and restraining animals during exams
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and tools
  • Ensure exam and operating rooms are stocked
  • Assist vet and vet technicians with surgical procedures
  • Provide care for animals after procedures, such as recovering from anesthesia as the animal wakes up
  • Ensure all cages and kennels are clean
  • Administer medications and fill prescriptions as needed
  • Assist in collecting samples such as blood or urine for testing
  • Communicate with owners and families on surgery and recovery instructions
  • Educate owners about animal health, conditions, and proper care

Veterinary Assistant/Technician Requirements and Qualifications

  • One (1) year previous experience in animal care or in a clinic is preferred but not necessary
  • Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments. Understand and carry out oral and written
  • Basic understanding of animal behavior and health care
  • Passion for working with animals and their owners
  • Interpersonal communication skills to communicate with owners and other veterinary staff
  • Attention to detail in order to maintain accurate patient records
  • Physical ability to restrain larger pets when necessary
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

This job description does not necessarily cover every task or duty that might be assigned. There may be additional responsibilities assigned as necessary. Previous work in a veterinary clinic is preferred but will consider training motivated candidates.
